I will be inheriting my wife's Mazda 3 soon. We are buying her a new(er) car and selling mine. The only real issue I have with her car is the tranny. It's an automatic but I'm ok with that. The problem is that it is a very casual auto. You can shift it manually but it doesn't help any. I know you could get shift kits back in the day to help with this. My Plymouth constantly chirped second and I had a "low gear set" installed in my Horizon. The question is, what can I do to help the Zoom-Zoom? I have heard a little about "flashes" to change shift points and such but not specific to Mazdas. Has anyone had experience with flashes? I also recall "shift kit in a bottle" transmission fluid but never knew anyone who used it. Suggestions, OPPO?

As long as you don't have a warranty, ECU tune.

The fact that you're forced to get your wife's old car, is a little saddening...

Is this tranny specific, or an ECU tune? Is it effective?

Try to find a Mazda specific forum.

The 3 is a fun car with a manual. I've ridden in one with an auto and it probably still drove well but I found the manumatic feature to be a gimmick. I'd doubt that a shift kit is a available and that even if the transmission computer can be reflashed, I doubt it's worth it for an econobox, even if it is a fun one.
If it's not too much of a hassle (financially and you'd be happy dd'ing a stick shift) I'd consider trading the 3 for one with three pedals. I'm very fond of mine.

What year is it? And what engine? The older 2.0 had a 4-speed auto, the 2.3 had a 5-speed. Later the 2.0 came with the 5-speed, with a 6-speed added for the 2.5 and SKYACTIV models.
I'm sure someone on a Mazda forum will know if there's a flash tune available... personally I would leave well enough alone.

Yeah bad idea. Making a car shift rougher on a run of the mill automatic = making the transmission worker harder and endure a lot = transmission repair in the future = terrible idea and money better spent elsewhere.

This was actually my choice. My wife is pretty supportive in the auto aspect of my life. Unfortunately I can't comfortably DD a stick anymore so I am selling my car. "Her" new car is more than likely going to be a Charger, so I'm not too upset about it. She is fairly adamant about wanting the Hemi, as well.

I guess I haven't found the right forum. Our Mazda has the base engine and not many people care about performance and buy the base engine. The performance between the two engines is pretty damn similar though.

The manumatic really is just a gimmick. The only good aspect is that you can hold it in second instead of it automatically going into 4th on curvy bits.
DDing a stick isn't what I want anymore. I have been for 11 years, but my knees got pretty beat up while I was in the army. Driving to and from work causes a lot of difficulty throughout the day, not to mention pain.

It's an 07 2.0. I'm not sure if it is worth the hassle or if it is really even feasible. That's why I'm asking around. :-)

That's fair enough and thank you for your service. I'd just deal with the auto then. As I mentioned, I don't think a transmission reflash is going to be worth it.
Beyond that, if it's in the cards, maybe replace the 3 with something sporting a double clutch as those are usually pretty good. VWs DSG is obviously well regarded and I think Ford offers on in the current gen Focus and I think even Hyundai has one in the Veloster.

I don't necessarily want rough shifts. I want more responsive shifts.

I guess I just have to anticipate shifting earlier. :-)
